Congratulations to Mrs. Vandeventer and Mrs. Witherington who are the recipients of the Greenwood Education Grant. They will use the grant for the 2nd and 3rd grade Essential Skills classroom to purchase communication devices. These will assist in providing the students a means of functional communication in the academic setting as well as the community during classroom outings.

Congratulations to Mrs. Beck and Ms. Ham who are the recipients of a Greenwood Education Foundation Grant. They will be using this grant to purchase literacy and math instructional materials for Kindergarteners. They have been working hard to differentiate in their kindergarten classes and are excited to have more materials that meet the needs of all students. 
Congratulations to Mrs. Slauter who is the recipeient of a Greenwood Education Foundation Grant. She will use this grant along with the other first grade teachers to support Weird Science Wednesday. We can't wait to see what crazy science experiements Southwest first graders will be doing!

Life can get busy and we cannot always make it to the library to check out new books to read. Don't worry, Southwest has you covered. We now have a great resource to help develop important reading and comprehension skills. There are books that students can take AR quzzes at school, books that can be read to your child, with your child, or read independently! 
Everyone at Southwest participated in different actictivies to celebrate International Day of Peace. The students and staff created the word peace with their bodies, sang songs about peace, and learned what peace means. A big shout out to Mrs. Cain, Mr. Corbin, Mrs. Billingsly, and Ms. Wehlacz for coordinating these special activities and helping making this a memorable day to learn about peace!

Every week in Ms. Ham's kindergarten class students participate in mystery sack. This week the letter is F. Students bring a secret object that begins with the letter of the week. The rest of the class has to guess what the object is based on the clues that are given by the student. Today the class guessed: fire fighter outfit, football, finger flashlight, frog, fox, fish and frisbee. This kindergarten class sure has a great time learning letter sounds!

First Grade had their Annual Mini 500 yesterday and it was a blast! This year the race was held on the high school football field as the rest of SW cheered them on to victory! Congrats to our finalists! And thank you to our first grade teachers who organize the event every year!

This past Wednesday all four of the Greenwood elementary schools gathered to compete in various track and field events. Southwest came out of the meet quite successful! The girls team came in 1st place overall and the boys placed in 2nd overall!!! Congrats to all our athletes and to Mrs. Cain for all their hard work!

For the last several weeks the specials team has joined together on Wednesdays to team teach. We were first able to help Mrs. Billingsly get extra music practice in before the Spring Concert. Then, we started our two week adventure in camping! The first week was spent learning how to build tents and then coloring a picture of tents in the style of Andy Warhol. This past Wednesday we gathered around our "campfire" for games, camp songs, and campfire stories. It's been a lot of fun for students AND the specials teachers!

5th grade is in the middle of their last project for the school year: Paper Mache Greek Vases! This has been an intense project because it first began with research! Students spent two art classes sketching ideas from their research on not only the shapes of ancient Greek vases, but the array of designs as well. Now, students are in the thick of using the paper mache process to make their vases to then be painted. It's an exciting project and I cannot wait to post the final results!

All of Southwest is buzzing with anticipation for Seussical the Musical Jr! Our students have been working so hard on their musical numbers, and we cannot wait to see them performed in their Seuss cosutmes! We hope to see you all there with your families! Here's some info you should know!
Ms. Webb would like to thank everyone who came out last Thursday to enjoy the 2015 Art Show and Family Ice-Cream Night! It was a HUGE success, and it was amazing to see so many families supporting a night of the visual arts! There was so much to do and see: framed artwork, photo op with silly props, mural drawing station, and of course ICE CREAM! 
Mrs. Zaborowsky's class made 22 birthday bags for a local food pantry. Each birthday bag had a cake mix, tub of icing, candles, and a blank birthday card for families that come to the food pantry to bake a cake for someone in their family.
